The player would think, then, Sally's titular guilt stems from the revelation she was one of Emily's bullies as well. The game takes place almost entirely inside the girls' school and the surrounding area, and thousands of messages which are persistently reiterating their bullies' thoughts are scrawled on walls and depicted in pictures on blackboards and even acted-out, constantly, by clothing store mannequins which appear throughout the world. Bullies chased Sally into this world, and bullies sent Emily there as well, and Sally feels guilty about it. To recap: Gylt sees Sally putting out fires while shining the light on both her and Emily's problems. Most enemies can be both stunned and destroyed with the flashlight, and the ones that can't still are thankfully able to be easily frozen. Occasionally problems will arise which require Sally to shine her flashlight at things like solar panels and gigantic eyeballs attached to amorphous blobs, and later on her extinguisher can be used to not only put out fires but also to freeze steam vents and puddles of water. The game is all set to a soundtrack by Cris Velasco, whose work ranges from Overwatch and Mass Effect to Borderlands, God of War, Bloodborne. Similar to how you were taught to face your fears when you were a kid, you’ll either be taking on these nightmarish creatures using your flashlight (a la Alan Wake), or coming up with strategies to distract them or stealthily maneuver around them. The familiar Survival Horror mechanic of deciding to either fight or flee from monsters in on full display in GYLT, but with the added component of it being from a child’s point of view. Now, not only has Sally got to find her way out of this alternate reality, but she also must solve the mystery of Emily’s disappearance. After being chased by a group of bullies, Sally is dragged into a twisted version of her town where her fears and worse memories are presented in a wicked and very real way. Life hasn’t been easy for Sally, and things haven’t gotten any better since her little cousin Emily disappeared. The story for GYLT revolves around Sally, a little girl living in Bethelwood. Described as an “accessible horror game for fans of the genre and beyond”, GYLT combines familiar Survival Horror tropes such as puzzles, stealth and action sequences, but presents them in such a way that younger horror fans can get into the genre. Originally a Google Stadia exclusive, Tequila Works and Parallel Circles’ kid Survival Horror title GYLT has been rescued from the now-defunct service, and is now available on PC via Steam, PlayStation and Xbox.
